Malecane

On a white ring, the lives of four young people are enacted. They enjoy listening to rap, dancing, playing sports, watching Netflix, and falling in love; on the other side they experience fear, hatred, insecurity, precariousness, the search for meaning, and the desire to belong to a community. In her four-year in situ investigative work, Paola Pisciottano traveled to various European countries, including Greece, Italy, France, and Belgium, where she met and interviewed 130 students, young workers, and activists of movements such as CasaPound in Italy, Schild & Vrienden in Belgium, and Aube Dorèe in Greece. The meetings formed the basis for the construction of the dramaturgical material and its development into the subsequent stage form.
Paola Pisciottano's project is an invitation to the viewer to question their consciousness and experience doubt alongside the performers on stage. The project aims to explore the power of fascination that extremist discourses have over us. It asks whether we can end up adhering to these discourses despite ourselves and if their influence is already at work in our consciousness. By integrating material from collected interviews with the personal experiences of the actors and actresses, "EXTREME/MALECANE" draws a trajectory that led to the emergence of new extremist identities and nationalist movements in each of the four countries in the survey. The project generates a derailment in the viewer, forcing them to question their sense of individual responsibility in the spread of these movements.
